When you translate a story from one medium to another, I.E. Cartoon to Live action film the average movie goer hopes it lives up to their beloved series and doesn’t disappoint as a person who occasionally writes movie reviews I tried to take an objective view of the whole thing. I was a huge fan of the series watched every single episode, it was well written didn’t talk down to kids and was silly enough to really make it so so brilliant. So when I heard about the film adaptation and that M. Night Shyamalan was directing it I actually was excited he’s a great story teller in films just sometimes the stories suck! So I thought well its not his work he can’t possibly mess this up……….. But he did, it was bad (I saw it twice) it was a cliff notes version of the story of The 1st Book: Water and I know its a film and it has to be shorter but what M. Night Shyamalan did was skip something so important that made the series wonderful. The heart it had little to no good interaction with the Characters Aang, Soka and Kitara (Which they changed the pronunciation of the names for some reason) Aang’s character is a cute kid who does Kid shit and there was so little of that in this film that he lost the basis of this 3 dimension character and made it seem flat. The fact that this movie lacked all aspects of what made the story so good, makes it just a huge failure in my book. The fight scenes were either exaggerated or in slow motion making them laughable. The acting i believe was also lacking but the story sucked so i might have just noticed it more. The one performance that i thought was pretty good was Uncle Iroh played by: Shaun Toub his portrayal i think was the most true to the character. If they plan on making the other 2 story arcs or Books let someone else do it please!
